In the exclusive teaser, he said that this season is more than just fishing to make money; it’s a race against time.” This is said while the harsh waves of the Bering Sea smash into the boats.

Hansen also said in the preview that this season, they will fish like “every string is the last string we’re ever gonna set.” He admits that many factors are out of their control, and there will be injuries, a fire, some tears, and a few unexpected twists. “Every split second could mean the difference between life and death,” he finishes.

The exclusive promo mentions that Deadliest Catch is not a “family show,” but that is what it has become. With the 20th season coming, this is a landmark moment for the long-running reality TV show, something that Hansen said they helped create the entire genre for.

Hansen said in the interview that he feels old, with 20 seasons passed. However, he also said he enjoys this lifestyle and loves doing more than just fishing. “It just showed me differences in the world, and even in the television industry, I get to see how things work,” he admitted.

He did say that all the extra people on the boats make things more stressful during an already dangerous occupation. He said it is not easy to do that job, raising the stress levels.

As for this season, Hansen said it is “derby-style” fishing. “Derby [race] is not easy. Derby is very dangerous,” Hansen said. “You don’t stop, and so every minute counts.” Derby-style fishing involves short seasons and more competition — a race for the fish.
