The Discovery Channel has canceled a popular Gold Rush spin-off series after nine seasons on the air. To add to the cancelation, it turned out that the host of the show didn’t know this was coming and had nothing to do with the final decision.

This includes everything from Tony Beets’ struggles with water permits to Parker Schnabel’s ambitious plans to older seasons where Rick Ness made surprising moves in where he wanted to find gold. Through it all, the series really showed the men behind the faces in the reality TV series.

Christo Doyle posted a series of behind-the-scenes blooper clips on Instagram as his reaction to the show’s cancelation. He also added a caption to the post showing how sad it was to leave the show. “Working on @goldrushtv has been a highlight but it’s finally time to stop talking sluice boxes & glory holes,” Doyle wrote. The clips showed him having fun with Parker Schnabel, Tony Beets, and more.

Usually, when a popular show like this is canceled, it is often a mutual decision between the network and the host or crew. When a show is successful, there are many reasons to cancel it, but for a show that is mostly about guys sitting in a room and promoting one of the best shows on the network, it seems like a no-brainer to keep going.

Gold Rush: The Dirt brought in an audience of 819,000 viewers on March 10, 2023, for a 0.26 rating. The most popular show on Discovery right now is Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing, with an audience of 1.6 million on June 11. The third most popular show right now is Deadliest Catch, which had 871,000 people watching on June 6. With those numbers, Gold Rush: The Dirt was one of the network’s most-watched shows. Despite that, the show’s official Twitter page tweeted that this was not Christo Doyle’s choice.

The person who runs the Twitter account wrote that they just talked to Doyle and said it wasn’t his decision. They then suggested that fans make “as much noise as we can, who’s with me?” It sounds like Discovery made the decision and no one on the show saw it coming. As one person commented in the Twitter thread, “This is a money issue for Warner Discovery. Watch folks a BUNCH of quality shows will be cut.” Fans now wonder if Gold Rush: White Water might be next.
